The high-speed handpiece dental drill is used for preparing a tooth to receive a filling or crown, or may be used to section a tooth or remove bone. Modern highspeed drills turn about 200,000 to 420,000 rpms and have very little, if no torque; therefore, needing only a very light touch. There is usually a light source contained within the handpiece (fiberoptics) as well as a water spray system for keeping the tooth cool and debris-free.
